Live Shopping is not a new concept – it has its roots a trend that began in the early 1990s with the likes of QVC and HSN, where “hosts” show products an talk about them on TV, and shoppers make phone calls to purchase. But the new Livestream Shopping of today differs in several ways:

• You can watch a Live Shopping event online with your computer, tablet, or phone in real time
• You can purchase immediately by tapping a product
• You can participate in the conversation via rolling chat
• You may be eligible for giveaways, special discount codes, and free product giveaways that are not available any other time

When did Livestreaming E-commerce start?

Good question! This concept began in China in 2016, when social retail giant Taobao developed a new way to market their products. It was a huge success! In 2020, Taobao sold out $7.5 Billion in merchandise in the first 30 minutes of a Livestream event for Singles’ Day, an unofficial Chinese holiday and the world’s largest online shopping event.

Other big retailers have taken notice – even Macy’s is in with weekly Livestream events, and other major brands like Walmart, The Home Depot, and Nordstrom are experimenting with it.

Avon Live made its debut in Spring 2021 with a presentation of the new fmg Cashmere Essence Lipcream, the only lipstick in the U.S. with a core containing Bio-Retinol! According to Avon’s Director of Events Jason Sigala, the Avon Live experience helps combine the benefits of in-person and online shopping into one event. “For Avon, live shopping has created an exciting new way for our Representatives to sell and for their customers to shop,” he said.
