For the last 135 years, Avon has been leading the way, empowering independent women to earn their own money and helping them stay beautiful at the same time. How many other beauty companies can say they’ve been around for 135 years? Avon must be doing something right!
From its humble beginnings in 1886 as the California Perfume Company, to the latest innovations in skin care, makeup, and so much more, Avon is still on top of its game and shows no signs of slowing down.
The company’s founder, David H. McConnell, was a bookseller who tired of selling books and wanted to venture into a business of consumable goods – ones that would be used up and need to be replenished. He decided on perfume, and started his business in a space scarcely larger than a kitchen pantry (much like Jeff Bezos started Amazon in his garage).
He started out with just five fragrances: Violet, White Rose, Heliotrope, Lily-of-the-Valley, and Hyacinth, manufactured using the natural perfumes of the flowers themselves. His customers were very pleased, and soon he added some new items to the line, including shampoo cream, witch hazel cream, almond cream balm, toothpaste, and others.
Needless to say, his business grew! Mrs. P.F.E. Albee was the first and only “General Agent” hired by McConnell for the first six months of the business. She went on to hire more agents, and the system for distributing goods was born. The Avon name was first introduced in 1928.
Today, there are roughly 180,000 Avon Representatives in the United States. There is still the traditional “Ding Dong! Avon Calling!” Avon Representative, but of course now you are able to shop online with your favorite Avon Representative and have your order delivered right to your door or mailbox. Avon has come a long way!
