My Temperature Blanket!

I’m a mad crocheter. Every day, I crochet for at least an hour while watching TV in the evenings. Usually, I have two or three WIPs (works in progress) going on at a time. I make sweaters, blankets, dishcloths, hats, scarves, you name it. Mostly I make things for myself, but I also make gifts for other people.

In all the 50+ years I have been crocheting, I had never heard of temperature (or weather) blankets until recently, when a Facebook group called Temperature/Weather Blanket! popped up in my feed.

The premise is this: You create a blanket based on the daily temperature where you live for an entire year. This is your own creation, so you choose how to do it and what you want to make. Some people make a scarf or even a stuffy snake instead of a blanket. Some who travel will use the temperature for their actual location. Your blanket can be knitted, crocheted, or even quilted. It’s your art that you can express however you choose!

People are so creative! There are granny square blankets, corner-to-corner blankets, ripple blankets, so many great ideas. Some crafters incorporate weather events such as snow into their stitches, or mark special days with a different stitch or adding a charm to the row. I went with a simple moss stitch for mine.

After scrolling through the group and looking at everyone’s WIPs, I thought, this is a great way to use up some of my yarn stash! So I went up to my “yarn room” and got out all of my random colors and balls of #4 acrylics and laid them all out on the floor. I picked colors that I thought would make a nice reflection of temperatures and went well together, and assigned them to ten-degree increments. Then I made a little cardboard color chart to follow.

If I run out of yarn in a color (which has already happened), I’m just finding the closest thing I can since it’s just for me anyway. The blue I had in my stash was apparently very old, as I couldn’t even find the same shade on eBay or Amazon. But I did find a pretty close shade that will work well.

I printed out a free calendar I found online, and record the temperature every day, then cross it off as I do the day so I don’t get messed up. For my temperature, I’m using the site timeanddate.com. So far, I am caught up, but even if I get behind a day or two, it only takes about 20 minutes to do each row so it’s easy to catch up.

I decided my blanket would be for my bed, since I’ve already done a few couch blankets and I have only one couch, and I’m doing the high afternoon temperature each day for my area (Southwestern Pennsylvania).

I started with 244 chains, and I’m using moss stitch and a 5.25 crochet hook. By my calculations, my blanket will be about eight feet long, and wide enough to hang over the sides of a full-size bed a little. Here’s what it looks like so far:

It starts with January at the top of the picture, and goes to March 24 at the bottom. Pennsylvania is one of those places where you can have all four seasons in one day, and wild fluctuations from day to day, which makes for a very interesting and colorful blanket!

I am loving this project, and can’t wait to see what it looks like when it’s finished at the end of the year. I’m also making a little legend using crewel embroidery on a vintage linen handkerchief, which I will sew to the bottom corner of the blanket when it’s complete.

One thing I did invest in (and I should have done this years ago) is a 10-ounce yarn ball winder from Amazon, because some of my stash yarn was in pretty messy condition. OMG! This thing is a game changer! Just anchor it to a table, thread your yarn through two loops, and turn the wheel to get these gorgeous cakes! (Also great for entertaining cats. ;-))

I highly recommend getting one of these if you’re a crocheter or knitter. It will save you from dealing with yarn barf and hidden knots in your skeins. And it takes just minutes to turn a full skein into a beautiful cake.

How do I earn and get paid with Avon?

First off, you’ll get 25% off your own orders of $40+ of beauty products (that includes makeup, skin care, personal care, health and wellness and more) as an Avon Representative, and you’ll earn 25% commission on beauty orders of $40+ from customers.

Getting paid is simple. You’ll get most of your earnings — from your online store orders, bonuses, incentive pay-outs, account credits, etc. — paid quickly and easily through the Avon Wallet payment portal.

For orders you deliver, your commissions are based on the difference between the discounted amount you pay and the full price your customer pays you. For example, you sell a lipstick to a customer for $10.00. If your commission level is 40%, you pay Avon $6.00, plus tax, and the rest is your profit.

How often do I have to place orders?

You can order as often as you want, whenever you want! Our most successful Representatives place orders each campaign (every two weeks), as well as share their online store link for 24/7 sales and commissions. To keep your account active and to stay up-to-date, we suggest placing an order in each campaign, or at the very least, once in every six campaigns.

RULES:

  • Contender Level – When you place $100 or more in cumulative orders in a campaign, you’ll earn a coupon code for free shipping on your next campaign order.
  • Premier Level – When you place $200 or more in cumulative orders in a campaign, you’ll earn a coupon code for free shipping on your next campaign order.
  • All Coupon codes will be sent via email the beginning of each campaign after achieved.

I Got the Powder! (Veggies, that is)

This is my latest food adventure – making my own powdered vegetables!

I saw someone post about this and thought, what a great way to get more nutritious vegetables into my diet! I’m pescatarian, so I eat a lot of veggies anyway, but there are some that I don’t get enough of or simply don’t like.

You can buy prepackaged greens powders and vegetable powders, but I love making my own because I know what’s in it and it’s all natural. The same goes for my homemade vegetable broth that I always have in the freezer.

If you’re a mom or dad with picky eaters, or you’re caring for elderly parents, or you just don’t like vegetables that much yourself, this is an easy way to sneak them in to other foods.

What you see above is my first batch. Believe it or not, this little jar of powder represents a full bundle of kale, a bag of carrots, and about eight Brussels sprouts that I had in the freezer. Any vegetables will work, as long as they’re in small enough pieces to dehydrate properly.

Why Powdered Vegetables?

According to WebMD, greens powders are not a substitute for a well-balanced diet, but they can be a great way to supplement a healthy diet with a boost of extra vitamins and antioxidants.

The nutrients in greens powders can contribute to potential health benefits, including:

  • Eye and Cognitive Health

Here’s how I did it:

Step One

First, I rinsed all of my vegetables in a colander, then dried as much as possible with clean tea towels (lay them out on one towel, top with a second towel and press out the moisture).

Step Two

Next, I cut the curly kale leaves off of the center rib, then cut them into smaller pieces about two inches around. Not too small, or they’ll fall through the dehydrator trays.

I had the crinkle-cut carrots, so I decided to dehydrate them as they were. PSA: Don’t do that! They took forever to dehydrate all the way because they were too thick. Next time, I’ll buy whole carrots and slice down with my mandoline on the thinnest setting. But live and learn, right?

My sprouts were pretty tiny, so I just halved them once they were thawed out.

Step Three

Now that I had a pile of nicely sliced veggies, it was time to dehydrate. I have a small Commercial Chef dehydrator that I love, and it was very reasonably priced! It has five trays and holds enough for me. I make sweet potato chips often, and this dehydrator holds a single sweet potato sliced very thin perfectly.

Of course, you can also dehydrate in the oven if you don’t have a dehydrator. Just make sure it’s not hot enough to cook your vegetables. You just want them dried completely out.

I set my dehydrator at 140 degrees, and I reshuffle the trays about once an hour. The kale got crispy pretty quick, after just a few hours. I remove the leaves as they’re done. The sprouts took longer, and the carrots, as I said, took a long time. Thinner slices needed!

Step Four

As the veggies were ready, I removed them and put them in a bowl. Make sure they are crispy all over and don’t bend. If they bend, there’s still moisture in there and they will mold. You don’t want that!

Step Five

Once they were all done, here comes the fun part! I dumped them all into my trusty Magic Bullet Blender and turned them into powder in seconds!

Now I have a shaker of magical vegetables that I can sprinkle into any recipe – soups, casseroles, omelets, smoothies, you name it – for an extra nutritional boost!

You can even sneak a little into brownies or cakes – your kids will never know! 😉

Avon Updates: 2024 Edition

Avon held its annual Kickoff meeting for Representatives on January 26, 2024. (I know; I’m a little late getting this post together. Life happens.)

Anyway, here are some of the topics you may be interested in. I am focusing here on the topics of interest to customers, but if you are a current Representative or even someone who is thinking about joining, you may be interested in these topics also.

2024 Main Priorities

The company has three main priorities to address in 2024:

  1. Stabilizing Product Supply. We’re all painfully aware of the supply issues that have been going on throughout 2023. These issues were due to Avon abruptly losing its manufacturer over a contract dispute, and having to scramble to get the products made elsewhere. We’re talking about 6,000 SKUs that had to be completely restarted from Square One. This involves not only finding a new factory, setting up production lines, ordering raw materials, and hiring staff, but also obtaining all the necessary government approvals for personal care items. These things take A LOT of time and effort. The good news is, some of the products are already back in stock, some are in production now, and some are still in the approval process. Soon everything will be back to normal.
  2. Strategic Product Portfolio. The company is evaluating the present product lineup, as all companies do, and plans to introduce several new Avon-branded products during the second quarter. Some products with low sales volume will be exited. They are considering possibly bringing back the household products. (We can hope – those cleaning products were the BEST! The HomeStar Glass Cleaner took the mold off the side of my house with just a squirt and a wipe! And the Fresh Fiji laundry products are amazing! Fingers crossed for this.)
  3. Building Connections. This means improved communications, including with Representatives and with Customers.

Brochure Improvements

Avon heard us – As of Campaign 6, the generic QR code that leads to the main corporate site will be removed from the back side of the brochure, as will the corporate phone number.

In Campaign 8, the “Product Guide,” which was simply a repetition of everything in the brochure and wasted half the pages, will be gone.

And, can we get a “Hallelujah”? Beginning with Campaign 12, the brochure will be back to 160+ pages, with product “stories” and actual models for the clothing items!

Not sure why they made the drastic changes to the brochure at the beginning of the year, but they heard us loud and clear and are making it right again. Another factor could be that sales were down due to many products not even being in the brochures. Not everyone uses the internet to shop. Many people still want to hold a catalog in their hands and fold down the pages of stuff they want. Maybe it took this experiment to send that message to corporate. Whatever the reason, we’re glad it’s coming back!

New Products to be Introduced Soon!

Several new products will be launched in the near future, including a beautiful new floral fragrance (hint: who loves orchids?) and a new Far Away version. There will also be new, on-trend fashion and jewelry to add to your wardrobe.

On the skin-care side, look for new serums to beef up your skin-care routine. Plus, how about “Skin Care Meets Makeup”? Yes, there will be new makeup products that incorporate skin-care ingredients like peptides. I can’t wait to try those! And watch for some new matte lipstick shades too!

Have you heard the buzz about snail mucin? It’s all the rage in skin care right now, and Avon will be offering its own line in Campaign 10.

Not familiar with snail mucin? Neither was I, so I did some research. According to the Mayo Clinic website, it appears that “certain types of snail mucin have moisturizing and protective qualities that are good for your skin. Snail mucin contains antioxidants that may help reduce signs of aging like wrinkles, uneven skin tone and sagging. Studies indicate that snail mucin helps with skin regeneration and protects against damaging free radicals.”

In one study, snail mucin users saw significantly improved fine lines, crow’s feet and luminance when compared with people in a group that used a placebo product without snail secretions. Also, it was noted that snail mucin could potentially help protect against melanoma, a dangerous skin cancer. In a study, snail mucin helped decrease the spread and growth of melanoma cells in the lab. (This is of special import to me, since I’ve already had two melanoma spots removed.) This is potentially huge!

In the Bath & Body category, a new Skin So Soft line will be introduced with the light scent of eucalyptus mint! These will be vegan products with sustainable packaging. Way to go, Avon!

Mark your calendar for the Shop & Learn Events, currently happening every Thursday at 3 p.m. Eastern Time. Each event provides a fun, informative overview and demonstration of select products.
